Reading and Phonics

At Squirrels Heath Infant School we use  Read Write Inc as our preferred way of delivering high quality teaching of synthetic phonics and reading.

Phonic teaching begins as soon as children join is in Reception and continues through in to Key Stage 1.  Pupils are assessed approximately every 6 weeks to ensure that they make good progress through the program and are supported with additional sessions if any gaps in their knowledge of phonemes, or ability to segment and blend, are identified.

More information about Read Write Inc is available below:

  • Read Write Inc website
  • Phonemes Pronunciation Guide
  • Facebook page

Children will bring home Book Bag Books to support their phonic and reading progress.  These books are matched to the phonic groups and therefore enable children to practice all of the phonemes they have been taught.  Children will also bring home a copy of the book they are reading in their Read Write Inc group each week, as a way to further support fluency and comprehension.
